COVID-19 UPDATE: April 20, 2020

Monday afternoon, Northwood CEO Janet Simm and Executive Director of Long Term Care Josie Ryan addressed the media in a virtual press conference. Video of that press conference is below.

In collaboration with the province, Northwood is activating an emergency plan to address the current COVID-19 outbreak. This is in addition to the safety measures we have in place to protect our residents.

With the activation of an emergency operations centre at Northwood, we have increased our resources in the fight against COVID-19. This operations centre includes:

  • Staff from NSHA and Department of Health and Wellness onsite at Northwood to support our response
  • Staff from many other partner organizations
  • A COVID-19 Recovery Unit, which has been established at a local hotel to care for recovered residents—our first resident moved there yesterday
  • Equipment we have received from Shannex for our recovery unit including electric beds, tables, and other supplies.

We are grateful for the support from many organizations, including:

  • Nova Scotia Health Authority
  • Department of Health and Wellness
  • Students
  • Victorian Order of Nurses
  • Northwood’s amazing homecare team
Red Cross: Glen Haven Manor, Oceanview, and many others
  • Emergency Health Services
  • Government staff and staff from other long-term care facilities

Resources from the Halifax Infirmary COVID-19 unit have also been redeployed to Northwood to treat COVID-19 positive residents on-site, and we have increased on-site testing frequency.

With these additional resources, we can continue to focus on our most important work: the care and support of residents at Northwood.

We would like to express our sincerest condolences to the families of those residents who recently died from COVID-19 or other complications. You are in our thoughts, and we will continue to support you during this difficult time.

We are doing everything possible for our residents. We are extremely grateful for the hard work of our incredible staff who are working tirelessly, doing everything possible to maintain the health and wellbeing of our residents. Every day, they bring love, caring, and warmth to every single one of our residents.

This is a time for understanding. This is a time for compassion. We want our Northwood families to know: we will continue to do everything we can to care for your loved ones.

We will be contacting families with updates about our residents on a more regular basis. Not just weekly. We have also created a new email where family members can send their questions: northwood@nshealth.ca.
