Best in Class
For the third year in a row, Northwood has been recognized as a top employer in the Atlantic Canada’s Top Employers competition. Northwood was also recognized in December as one of Nova Scotia’s top employers for 2015. The Atlantic Canada’s Top Employers competition is organized by the editors of Canada’s Top 100 Employers.
The competition, which has been held annually for six years, recognizes employers in Atlantic Canada that are leaders in their respective industries on creating exceptional workplaces. Employers are evaluated on physical workplace, work atmosphere & social, health, financial & family benefits, vacation & time off, employee communications, performance management, training & skills development and community involvement. To determine the leaders amongst Atlantic employers, organizations are compared to other organizations in their field. Areas that Northwood has shown leadership in include:
- Maternity and parental leave top up payments (depending on position) as well as an option to extend leave into an unpaid leave of absence.
- A variety of onsite amenities, including an employee lounge, quiet room for meditation and relaxation, and a fitness facility with exercise equipment and shower facilities.
- Contributions to a defined benefit or defined contribution pension plan, depending on employee group.
- Offering paid internships, co-op placements, and summer student positions.
“To be recognized three years in a row is quite an achievement. It speaks volumes about what we have in place to support our staff” says Janet Simm, President and CEO of Northwood. And as the Atlantic Business magazine says, “Yes, the recognition is nice, but the ultimate prize is being the type of employer your staff will brag about.”
A profile on Northwood can be found in the January/February issue of the Atlantic Business magazine, as well as information on the other winners.
