Michael has lived in Halifax since 1971. He obtained law degrees from Dalhousie University and the University of London. He was admitted to the Bar of Nova Scotia and later became a partner at the firm of Blois, Nickerson, Palmeter and Bryson. He carried out legal work for private, corporate and agency clients. In 1990, Michael was appointed a Judge of the Provincial Court for Nova Scotia.
Michael has been a member and officer of several charitable, advocacy and arts organizations.
